THE DESERT SPRINTS REGATTA at TEMPE TOWN LAKE The largest rowing event in the State of Arizona. When: Saturday, March 10, 2012; 8:00 a.m. (Heats if needed will start at 7am) Where: Tempe Town Lake, Tempe, AZ The waters of Tempe Town Lake will be churning with the blades of hundreds of rowers on March 10, 2012 as Tempe hosts the 11th Annual Desert Sprints Regatta. Rowing clubs from California, Colorado and Utah are expected to compete against Arizona's best Junior/High School teams, ASU's club team and local Masters men's and women's crews in one of the first regattas of the spring sprint season. 'The Desert Sprints Regatta has been growing in popularity every year', said Kathy Moum, President of the regatta sponsor, the Tempe Rowers Association. Kathy also said that the TRA and the City of Tempe are looking at a combined effort to have a 1000M buoyed course installed on Town Lake in time for the regatta. The Junior races will be particularly competitive, as collegiate rowing programs are recruiting many of the local scholar-athletes from Brophy Prep, Tempe Junior Crew, Tempe Town Lake Rowing Juniors and Xavier Prep. For the Colorado and Utah teams, this may be the first time they have been able to row on the water in the new year, having prepared through rigorous winter-long workouts on rowing machines and other training regimens.Teams will be competing in a series of 1500 meter (Open and Junior Events) and 1000 meter (Masters and Mixed) races in both sculling and sweep boats. Spectators are encouraged to watch the races along the lake's north shore, with regatta headquarters and the boats launching from the SRP Marina, also located on the north shore of the lake. Sponsorship opportunities are available, including the highly coveted Trophy Races. For more information please contact Kathy Moum at 602-430-0206.Adaptive Racing: For the first time, the 2012 Desert Sprints will have Adaptive Racing. Tempe Town Lake has a committed and growing group of adaptive rowing athletes representing Rio Salado Rowing Club. Hope to see you all at Tempe Town Lake in March for the Desert Sprints Regatta. It will be a great way to open the season. |

Desert Sprints Regatta needs YOU!If you've arrived at this page....why, yes, we'd love to have you as a volunteer for the 2012 Desert Sprints Regatta! We will need most of our volunteers from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, although we can also use help on Friday afternoon and before 6 on Saturday. Most of the shifts are 3 to 4 hours long, but if you are willing to work longer, that's great. Some of our key needs are: - Parking. Help guide participants and spectators to open areas of the marina.
- Set-up. Tables, tents, banners, merchandise...everything to get the regatta ready to go.
- Registration/information. Giving out packets early, giving out medals later, helping answer questions all day.
- T-shirts and clothing. Rowing gear practically sells itself, but we still need your help to ring the register.
- Assistant dock and ramp masters. Help direct incoming and outgoing boat traffic.
- Safety boat drivers. See the action up close as you follow races down the course.
- Finish line. Assist the finish line official with timing and order of finish.
- Results runner. Bring a bike and deliver results from the finish line to regatta HQ.
- Rovers. You might end up doing any of the above! Please be flexible and bring a cell phone.

This year, 4 young athletes, rowing for Tempe Town Lake Rowing and Tempe Junior Crew, qualified for the 2011 USRowing Youth National Championships to be held in Oak Ridge, Tennesee. This marks the sixth year in a row that Tempe Junior Crew has qualified for the regatta and each year the team has not only made the Grand Final, but has medaled. This is the second appearance for Tempe Town Lake Rowing. TJC qualified three boats. Sophie Heywood and Casey Redman placed first and second, respectively, in the Women’s 1X event and teamed up on the second day of qualifying to win the Women’s 2X event. Tempe Town Lake Rowing will be represented in the Men’s Lightweight 2X by Trevor Day, a sophomore from Arcadia High School, and Will Crimmins, a senior from Mc Clintock High. The TRA is proud to support these athletes who represent the Arizona rowing community on a national and international level. Congratulations! |
