On the evening of Tuesday, July 20 one of the bladders at our west end dam burst. As a result our man-made lake is now dry and it is expected to be this way for 90 days. Our goal is to have our rowers back on the lake by November 1, but in the mean time Tempe Town Lake is not available for any boating activities. The Hot Head Regatta, 2010 is cancelled but we will be back in 2011 with a regatta that will be bigger and better than any Hot Head we have hosted. Please don't forget we will still hold our Desert Sprints Regatta, 20 11 on Saturday March 5. Watch Regatta Central for registration details. |

This year, five young athletes, rowing for Tempe Junior Crew, qualified for the 2010 USRA Youth National Championships in Cincinnati, OH. This marks the fifth year in a row that Tempe Junior Crew has qualified for the regatta and each year the team has not only made the Grand Final, but has medaled. In all, TJC qualified four boats, the W1X, M1X, W2X and W4X. The team has opted to focus on the M1X and the W4X for the campaign to earn national titles. Three of the five athletes are graduating this year and all 3 are going on to row in college with rowing scholarships or University financial assistance . Zack Dale, who has graduated a year ahead of schedule, will be attending MIT. Jesse Burns will be rowing at the University of Tennessee on a full ride and McKenzie Redman will be rowing at Southern Methodist University on a rowing scholarship as well. The other two young women in the 4x , Sophie Heywood and Jesse Burns , have been invited to attend the US Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp for a chance to earn a seat in the 4X that will represent the US at this year's Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic. The TRA is proud to support these athletes who represent the Arizona rowing community on a national and international level. Congratulations! |

Tempe was named one of the Best Places to Retire and Row in the United States by The Rower's Almanac. Rating factors included housing costs, state income tax rates, number of restaurants, theatres, libraries and hospitals, types of water and rowing available, number of boathouses and regattas, and the size of the local rowing population. Optimal rowing conditions, a low cost of living and a high quality of life also factored into the mix. According to www.RowingandSculling.com, Florida has three cities in the top ten, Sarasota, FL (#1), Cape Coral, FL (#3) and DeLand, FL (#6). North and South Carolina each have one: Raleigh, NC (#4), and Columbia, SC (#5). Austin, TX (#2), Tempe, AZ (#6-tied with DeLand), Klamath Falls, OR (#7), Natchitoches, LA (#8), Lakeport, CA (#9) and Greenwood, NY (#10) also made the list About The Rower's Almanac The Rower's Almanac provides rowing organization information about clubs, colleges, juniors, associations, rowing businesses, coaches and referees around the world. The Rower's Almanac maintains the largest database of rowing organizations with approximately 6,000 rowing clubs in more than 100 countries. |
